Building telescopes has become as much of a hobby as using them. In order to build a telescope one must first decide what type they would like. The most common telescope built by amateurs if the Newtonian, otherwise known as "The Poor Man's Telescope". The reason the Newtonian is so popular for building is because it only has a single objective mirror which needs to be ground and polished. While the Newtonian is the most often built telescope, the range of telescopes that people build vary. So do not feel as though you are limited.
There are some companies that sell builder kits which come with all the basic necessities an amateur builder would need. However, the cost of supplies for building a telescope can be small if one uses a little imagination and know-how. Whether or not to use a builder kit depends entirely on what the person is hoping to accomplish. If they simply wish to become familiar with the process and have it done as quickly as possible, then a builder kit may be the perfect match. There are also companies that just provide basic necessities to potential builders, for instance lenses which are already ground, polished, and coated. These types of products can be good for the novice builder who already has some experience with building a telescope.
There are some builders whom built a telescope from scratch from start to finish, including their mounts and eyepieces. It can be a long task, but rewarding none-the-less. One of the main areas where builders of all types of telescopes meet is testing the shape of the mirror. This is done by using a Foucault tester. A Foucault tester can be purchased or made. The most simple Foucault tester consists of a light bulb, a piece of aluminum foil with a pin hole in it, and a razor blade.
If one does decide to begin making a telescope a Newtonian is recommended simply due to the amount information available about its construction and the ease of assembly. It is a good beginning that will not overwhelm the amateur telescope builder. However, no matter what type of telescope one decides to built, research is the key. Be sure to research books and builder kit's a like. Also be sure to have a stable work environment with plenty of light and space.
