Celestron was first known as Valor Electronics and was founded by Tom Johnson who created the company by building a telescope from scratch for his two sons. The company was later sold in 1980; in 2002 it was purchased by three of Celestron's senior management team members. The first development which Celestron underwent was creating the Schmidt corrector plate at a more economical cost in 1970. It was under the new owners where Celestron launched the observatory-class CGE Series of computerized equatorial telescopes. Another company buyout happened in April of 2005 when SW Technology Corporation became the new owner of Celestron.
The Celestron telescope has received many acclamations in the way of being selected for use in many major colleges and universities as well as being chosen for use on space shuttle missions by NASA. Celestron has also received many media awards in popular magazines such as Reader's Digest, Popular Science, PC Magazine, Popular Mechanics for productive innovation. Celestron telescopes are sold nationally through speciality retail outlets as well as through international dealers.
The warranty for Celestron telescopes is two years limited and covers all their telescopes. The company promises to do everything they can to repair or replace a product within 30 days, or if this product is discontinued replace it with a comparable model. In the event that it takes longer than 30 days, Celestron will contact the customer.
The Celestron products cater to the more knowledgeable hobbyist and while they do offer a few beginner options for under $100, they focus more on computerized telescopes or observatory-level products. The highest priced telescope model was $40,000. Celestron does not sell their products online, though they do have retailers and online dealers which do. The website provides a full list of these businesses. The Celestron factory is located in Torrance, California.
